ELRC at German Round Table for Open Data

On 7 May, Alexandra Soska, ELRC’s Public Services National Anchor Point (P-NAP) for Germany, was invited by the Open Data representatives of the federal ministries to give a talk at one of their official open data meetings. Alexandra highlighted that even nowadays, the importance of sharing language data is often neglected. While language resources are indispensable for training machine translation (MT) systems and optimizing their output, their collection often requires effort. With ELRC, there is a European initiative that supports and coordinates the collection of language resources for eTranslation, the European Commission’s MT service which is also available to public administrations across Europe. The Open Data representatives showed great interest in the practices of collecting language resources and also noted parallels between their work and the questions dealt with in ELRC, in particular with regard to making language resources available and sharable. Above all, Alexandra’s talk highlighted once more the usefulness and importance of open data.
