Successful EU Council Presidency Kick-off Workshop in Croatia

Opened by Bernard Gršić, State Secretary at the Central State Office for the Development of the Digital Society in Croatia, the EU Council Presidency Translator Workshop took place on 28 January introducing for the first time the automated translation service especially designed for the 2020 Croatia’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The EU Council Presidency Translator is powered by the CEF eTranslation platform and features unique Croatian-English-Croatian machine translation systems built with neural networks and boosted with ca 400.000 additional domain dependent translation units. It is freely available to all Croatian public sector translators to use either online or in SDL Trados Studio with a plug-in. The preliminary automatic evaluation shows the score 6 to 7 BLEU points better than Google Translate for directions HR->EN and EN->HR.

First impressions are very positive. Marko Tadić, Professor at the Department of Linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb summarizes: "When translate, the neural machine translation systems examine the whole sentence in its textual surroundings and thus produce high-quality translations that resemble human translations more than any other machine translation system before."
